WHAT IS BODY CONTOURING? The term body contouring refers to any procedure tightening and/or lifting the skin, as well as procedures that smooth out bumps of excess fat. Dr. Corey most often uses the “Tumescent Techinque” whereby fluid is first infiltrated into the target area, allowed to diffuse into the tissues for a period of 10-15 minutes and removed through a small tube or canula. Any specific questions you may have can be addressed in detail during your initial consultation or by calling our office at (480)767-7700. What is a board certified plastic surgeon? A board-certified plastic surgeon is someone who has met the requirements of the American Board of Plastic Surgery which include additional training and residencies focused on aesthetic procedures, the passing of written and oral exams, and having surgical results approved by a panel of board-certified plastic surgeons. Dr. Corey is a board-certified plastic surgeon. What is the right age for plastic surgery? There is no upper age limit. When it is right for you to have a procedure is entirely personal and should be based on your unique needs and desires. Risks of infection are greatly reduced by choosing a plastic surgeon who performs procedures in accredited surgical facilities. You can further reduce risks by following all of Dr. Corey’s pre and postoperative instructions. How do I pay for my surgery? We accept cash and all major credit cards. We also offer through Prosper Healthcare Lending, which can be applied for online. Can I continue to take medications? That depends. You will need to provide Dr. Corey with a list of all medications, supplements, and herbs you are taking. He will help you determine which are safe to continue and which need to be avoided prior to your surgery. Do I need to quit smoking? Yes. Smoking impacts healing and can even complicate surgery. If you smoke, Dr. Corey suggests quitting at least six weeks in advance of your procedure and for 4 weeks following. How do I prepare for surgery? Surgical preparation may require discontinuing certain medications and making other lifestyle adjustments. This is an individual undertaking and will need to be based on your specific needs. Dr. Corey will instruct you how best to prepare during your surgical planning phase. How can I best prepare my home for post-operative recovery? It is important that you create a comfortable space where you can recover. You may wish to stock this space with books, magazines, and movies to help make resting more pleasurable. Be sure to fill all prescriptions from Dr. Corey before your surgery and to have them easily accessible during your recovery period. It is also a good idea to arrange for help from a friend or relative for the first few days following surgery, particularly for more involved procedures such as tummy tuck or mommy makeover. • Plastic Surgery Postoperative Questions

  Bathing/Water Exposure When can I shower? Breast augmentation only – 24 hours after surgery All other surgeries – 48 hours after surgery When can I bathe, swim or use a hot tub? When your steri-strips come off and assuming there is NO opening in the incision line which would allow bacteria to enter into your body, it is ok to bathe, swim, or use the hot tub. This is generally the case at about 6 weeks after surgery. Tape/Drains/Pain Pumps When will my pain pump be removed? A long acting local anesthetic is infused under pressure into the surgical site. When it appears that there is no longer any liquid remaining in the pump, the pump will look flat with a rubber core about the size of a cigar and you may remove the pump by peeling off the little clear band-aids and pulling the small brown tubes until they come all the way out of your skin. You won’t feel this and they come right out. This generally happens on day 3-5 post surgery. If I have drains, when will my drains come out? If you have had an abdominoplasty, reverse abdominoplasty, or mini abdominoplasty and you are draining 30 cc or less in a 24 hour period, your drain can be removed by Dr. Corey or his nurse. If you have had a facelift Dr. Corey normally removes the drain before you are discharged from the outpatient facility. If for some reason your drain is not ready for removal at this time, Dr. Corey will advise you when it is necessary to come into our office and have it removed. How long will my steri-strips stay on? If you had abdominoplasty, any type of mastopexy or donutpexy, your steri-strips from surgery will stay on for 2 weeks and then will be changed in the office. Replacement tape will be applied at that time and usually lasts about 1 more week. Silicone sheeting, if purchased, can be applied then or other tapes as needed. If you had a breast augmentation and the steri-strips are located under your arm, your steri strips will stay on until they basically fall off themselves. Bras/Velcro Strap/Compression Garments How long do I have to wear the surgical bra? You will need to wear a non-wire bra until Dr. Corey directs you not do so anymore. Start with the surgical bra that the office gives you and then usually at about 7 days, women transition into a different type of non-wire bra. Ninety nine percent of people like the way the sports bra feels and it is very comforting. If it is aggravating to you, you do not need to wear it. Most people like it but if you do not, either change to a different bra or do not wear one. When can I use an underwire bra? Why the wait? The underwire bra can impede the implant from dropping to its natural position and keep your implants high thus preventing them from settling into place. You may begin to use an underwire bra when Dr. Corey feels that’s your breasts are doing what they are supposed to!!! Most women are back in a wire bra in 3-6 weeks. Do I need to sleep in a bra? We would like you to wear a bra at all times for the first week. After 1 week, you may sleep without the bra. If the bra feels too tight or hurts, switch immediately to any bra without an underwire that feels comfortable. A bra that is too tight can cause ulceration of the skin. If it is more comfortable you may go braless. What is the Velcro strap for and how long do I need to use it? When you have breast augmentation surgery the velcro strap is used to help settle the implants into their natural position. When you get home and take your first shower, you will replace the velcro strap up high and snug but not painful across your chest and then put your sports bra on top of this. After four days you will not need to wear the velcro strap and will just wear the sports bra. How long do I need to wear my surgical compression garment? Patients who have received liposuction need to wear their compression garments for 4-6 weeks after surgery. It is OK to remove the garment for several hours during the day but again, try to wear it as much as you can. A few weeks after surgery you may begin to wear other equivalent store bought compression garments as long as they are snug and supportive. You may launder it but do not heat dry it.. ACTIVITY/EXERCISE/DRIVING How soon should I get out of bed? You should be up and out of bed at least 2-3 times on the first day of surgery. Moving is important. It prevents blood clots from occurring in your legs. While you are in bed it is important to flex your calf muscles and some people draw the alphabet with their feet several times an hour. When can I exercise? You may take gentle walks within a few days after surgery. During the first two weeks post surgery if you are no longer having pain or discomfort you may walk outside, do gentle exercise or even some cardio on a stationary bike. Do not return to any bouncing exercise for 2 weeks as this may cause bleeding.

• General Surgery FAQ

  After surgery is it very common to have lots of questions! In order to help ease your mind, I have compiled a list of frequently asked questions that will be of great benefit to you. If you can't find the information that you are looking for please feel free to give me a call (480) 309-1095 on the nurse line. (Please be advised that the nurse phone hours are Monday – Friday 9am- 4:30pm. If you leave a voicemail or text outside of the listed hours I will not receive your message until the next business day) PLEASE READ ALL OF YOUR INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION PROVIDED!!! Being prepared and well educated will greatly reduce anxiety, uncertainty and will help ensure you have the best outcome possible! Breast Surgery Patients If you have a small white band around your chest you only need to wear it for 4 days total-including the day of surgery. You do NOT have to specifically wear the white bra that we give to you. If it is uncomfortable for you after surgery then you may wear a different bra that is soft and comfortable (no underwire bra unless you have been specifically told to wear one). If you have only had breast augmentation then you do not have to wear it if you are uncomfortable wearing it Your breasts will likely take 4-6 weeks to settle (be in the proper position) so no bra shopping until then! If you have had a breast lift please wear some kind of bra for support (again soft and comfortable is what you will want) Sleep elevated for 4-5 days or as long as you need to do to swelling. You may sleep on your side when you can do so comfortably (a soft pillow between you and the mattress will help until the soreness subsides) Your breasts always look abnormal at first! Don't worry this will change as your implants settle and your muscles and skin relax. It is common to hear a sloshing sound for a week or so after surgery. Dr. Corey will irrigate the pocket for the implant with fluid and that takes time to absorb. It is common to be able to feel the bottom of your implant- that part is not covered by the chest muscle. Your breasts may go through a phase of hypersensitivity during healing- this is normal. If you have some numbness after surgery this will most likely resolve with time- the amount of time varies with each individual. Physical restrictions after surgery: no bouncing of any kind for 2 weeks (no running, treadmill etc. and no chest muscle exercises (flys, bench pressing, push-ups etc.) for 3 months. You may ride a recumbent bike when you feel like it as well as walking outside. Bicep and triceps exercises may be resumed when comfortable. Be gentle here! Think light weight and progress as tolerated. You will be sore for a few weeks so take it slow! You can do leg exercises when you are ready- seated leg press, walking lunges, leg extensions, seated hamstring curls etc. Yoga when you are ready but avoid plank type positions. If your incisions are under your arms, you may use deodorant (provided its not spray deodorant) about a week after surgery. You may then shave up to and down to your steri-strips. Please do not shave directly over your incision for at least 2-3 weeks to allow time for healing. One breast may settle before the other You do not need to massage before your post-op appointment. I will discuss this with you then. You may not sleep on your stomach for 6 weeks. It is VERY common to feel that your abdomen is bloated for the first week or so after surgery! Notes for Everyone The antibiotics are the only medication that isn't optional! Please start these the day of surgery. If your surgery is before 12noon then you will take your first antibiotic dose the night of your surgery. If your surgery is after 12 noon you may take your first dose the morning after your surgery. Get your prescriptions filled at least a week prior to surgery! Sometimes pain pills have to be ordered and we don't want you to be without your pain meds after surgery! Do NOT drink alcohol while taking pain meds or the Valium! You may drive when you are off of the medications and are physically able to do so safely (please be advised driving with Valium or Demerol in your system would be classified as a DUI) Do not ice any area for more than 20 mins at a time. If you are taking Arnica and you run out you may purchase more at Sprouts, Whole Foods, Amazon ). Take as directed on the bottle/tube. Arnica tablets are for before and after surgery; arnica gel is for after (don't get in your incisions) Everyone can shower after 48 hours. You can remove all dressings except steri-strips. No scar gel of any kind until your incisions are completely closed. You may use the scar gel until your incisions turn white. HEALING TAKES TIME! IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR ONE SIDE TO BE MORE SWOLLEN, BRUISED OR SORE THAN THE OTHER-EVEN SEVERAL WEEKS OUT. If there is a significant difference please call!! Sleep may be difficult for you for several reasons.
